Filoli: One of the Nation's Most Beautiful Public Gardens Only 20 Minutes From Burlingame
Did you know that one of the most beautiful public gardens in the country is less than twenty minutes from Burlingame? Chances are you probably haven't yet heard of Filoli, which is recognized as one of the finest country estates of the early 20th century, at the southern end of Crystal Springs Lake in Woodside. It's an awesome place to go for a leisurely morning or afternoon.
Filoli is a historic site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is dedicated to the preservation, interpretation and stewardship of the cultural traditions and natural history of this country estate for public education and enjoyment.
The popular tours of the House and Garden are available from early February through late October, but there are special holiday events that run from now until this Saturday, December 3rd. The holiday events include a Premiere Access Shopping Evening, where you can shop for holiday merchandise and gifts while enjoying piano music, hors d’oeuvres and white wine, an Elegant Evening of Dining & Dancing.
While Filoli is currently closed for renovations, it will reopen to the public on February 7th, 2012, so that gives you plenty of time to read all about the teachers and schools programs and the neat classes for adults, children and families. You can take a virtual tour of this remarkable 654–acre property, including the 36,000 square foot Georgian country house and spectacular 16–acre English Renaissance garden by clicking here. You may even be inspired to volunteer, and there are opportunities from flower arranging to helping in the café to ticket sales!
Filoli is located at 86 Cañada Road in Woodside.
Now that you've made it down here, I'll share a bit of Burlingame historical trivia with you: did you know there was a flower farm in the Burlingables neighborhood called McClellan Nursery that shipped over 250,000 flowers a month to the San Francisco flower mart?
