Almost five years ago, my daughter Lily and I set out to find the perfect home, hoping to have that “we belong here” feeling. After looking in Burlingame for at least 2 months, I wasn’t optimistic, but I saw the Townhouse for sale on Zillow and decided to check it out. She was age 8 at the time, and chose that particular day to dress very fashionably, accessorizing to the nines with a scarf, hat, jewelry, etc. It was a gorgeous Fall day, and as we passed through the welcoming courtyard and entered the home we thought, this could be the one! However, we noticed right away that we weren’t the only ones who might be thinking that--there were 15 to 20 families packed into the open house. It only took a quick run through the house to realize we wanted to live here--but we left discouraged thinking we could never compete with that many people. Little did we know, the owners at the time were sitting in the restaurant across the street and they had noticed my daughter’s flashy attire, and both said to each other that they hoped we would submit a bid on the house, which we did that evening--one of many.

Fast forward a few days and after a bit of adjustments, we were the highest offer. What an amazing day that was! We moved in quickly--without furniture, sitting in lawn chairs, and laying a blanket on the floor and having picnic dinners in front of the cozy fire for months. Decorating this home was fun and easy, and the dramatic paint job we had done in the hallway is our pride and joy. We placed our new couch facing the beautiful French doors, instead of the TV. We created a teen hangout space in the garage where Lily could hang out with friends--playing dolls down there quickly turned into making slime, watching movies, and dancing. This home is comfortable and quiet, and we even love the bay view (okay, sliver of a bay view) from the primary suite. We have enjoyed the walkability of this property--to the market to get fresh produce, popular restaurants, top notch schools, convenient Walgreens, the train, and even up Broadway to Cabrillo Ave which is famous for its spectacular Halloween decor. This is the home where I started letting my daughter go to the market alone, because I could see her the entire way from my balcony! We will truly miss the sun beaming through the large windows on sunny days, and our evening strolls down charming Broadway.

This year was difficult for many due to Covid and sheltering in place orders. What did we do to entertain ourselves? Once again, our house served us well. It was host to a virtual trip to Hawaii, spa days, a yoga retreat, a 13th birthday zoom party, 1st day of 8th grade, and so much love. And bonus--my Xfinity internet is very stable so working and school zooming at home has been a breeze. We also enjoyed the fabulous local hiking, like Sawyer Camp Trail. Lily even took her jazz and ballet classes via zoom on a portable dance floor in the garage--her hodgepodge of mirrors are still there.

What brought us here was the convenience, what kept us here was warmth, character, and charm. This home has been good to us and we will miss it, and running into friends downtown just outside our door. We have made memories here, and this home is filled with love and creative experiences, and we wish the same to the next owner.
