I am happy to hear Burlingame now has a community alert system that can be tied to your cell phone. I just signed up and am glad the City is offering such a service, and would recommend any Burlingame resident consider signing up for this free program. To sign up for Rapid Notify on the City of Burlingame’s website, click here.
Below is the press release and details about the program:
The City of Burlingame is expanding access to its telephone community alert system. The system, provided by Rapid Notify, has been used by the City of Burlingame for approximately four years and up until now, depended on phone numbers provided by the telephone company for its caller database.
“Providing our community with information of current events in a timely manner is significant to our policing strategy” “We want to communicate the information in a way that people want to get it.” said Burlingame Police Chief Ed Wood. Burlingame’s Community Alert System is used by not only the Police Department, but other City departments such as Public Works to get important information to residents. Some of the messages sent on the system include:
• In-progress events impacting a neighborhood or area, such as a fire, traffic collision, gas leak or other emergency.
• Planned events impacting a neighborhood or area, such as road construction or a large community event.
• Crime information such as a series of thefts.
• Missing endangered child or adult.
• Severe weather
The new system allows members of the public to sign up to get important community alerts on cell phone, work phone or home phone, regardless of carrier. Subscribers set up a login and password, which allow them to modify their information or opt-out of the system as they choose.
The public can sign up for the Burlingame Community Alert System at the City of Burlingame website www.burlingame.org. Once on the homepage, go to Police under departments and choose “Be Informed.” Select Rapid Notify in the list. This will take you to the sign-in screen.
